THE TREASURE OF TOLMEC

Tolmec is a Mexican village too small to have a school, too poor to rebuild the church destroyed in a recent earthquake. False rumor of a treasure under the church rubble brings two thieves to the town, and Jorge, the widow's son, unwittingly helps them to steal the region's one real valuable--a Titian. The life of a peon, the lingering respect for the padrone, existence in a tiny village are carefully defined without being effectively evoked, all in a vocabulary too advanced for the simplistic explanations and large print.
