Mrs. Rich adopted Maine as her home state some years ago, and has written several books about it since. This latest one, part of the Regions of America series, treats of the history and habits of Maine in an informal and affectionate manner. The major portion of the book, which concerns Maine's history, is generally straightforward, with many facts included in its stories. The final essays, on Maine habits and characters, tend to be a trifle too personal and diffused. Nevertheless, a good deal of specific knowledge and a feel for the country is conveyed. If the book is not precisely a definitive history or reference book, it is a pleasantly informative account of a remote, story-filled, eccentric, beautiful, and often surprising part of the world.
