EMOTIONAL HEALTH ON THE JOB

Inaugurating a new series- Executive Policy and Leadership directed toward those concerned with management, this excellent, extensive orientation on mental health has been prepared by a Director of the Menninger Foundation for everyday use by executives, administrators and occupational physicians. In the first section he discusses the equilibrium which must be maintained between the id, superego and environment, and the various controls applied to the various drives. The central section deals with reactions, fear, hostility, depressive, immature, manifest etc. under stress, along with their possible physical side effects. Then there are the ""arenas"" of adult life where problems relate to identity, to advancement, to family or age. Some final chapters indicate the ways in which management can buffer conflict, in the individual, within the organization, providing professional help is not necessary. The theoretical overview is implemented with illustrative casework. A valuable definition and clarification.
