Homesteading in the Texas panhandle provides the background for a girl's story that is seriously and sentimentally toned. At 15, Kay Pierce is delighted with her older sister Melinda's wedding, and by the prospect of going to East Texas to live with her grandmother and go to the Lewisville Academy for a year. But just at the point when the world seems to be opening up, Grandmother falls and breaks her hip and Kay's mother must be off to take care of her, leaving Kay, as the oldest girl, to look after her 17 year old twin brothers, a younger sister and Mr. Pierce. The condition endures for three months, during which time Kay loses much of her shyness and proves herself staunch and able enough in emergencies to convince her mother that she is adult enough to live with Grandmother after Christmas. A last page budding of romance will titillate young readers.
