The generic French roman d'analyse takes to the couch to probe the emotional confusion in which Mme. Marie Morel, an analyst, a wife, and the mother of two finds herself. Withdrawn by nature, she finds herself ill-equipped to face the fact that Jean, her husband, is involved in an affair with another Marie who offers a sensual, sophisticated attraction she has never given him. She attempts- and fails- to participate in his world at this level; she has the protective interest of an old friend, Claude; but it is not until she falls in love with a patient Mazurels a well known writer and an exceedingly charming man, that she finds the emotional release and redirection of her life.... In diary form, this physician exposes and heals herself, and it is an extravagant rather than reticent display of emotion.
