CAPITAN The Story of an Army Mule

The author of Luci and His Nuon falls down on this one. It is a long drawn out account, as related by Capitan himself, of his adventures from colthood on a Missouri farm through his service with the Regular Army in Cuba and the Philippines in the Spanish-American War, and later in the World War. A commentary of 40 pages at the end of the book sums up the historical background. Good material, spoiled by the first person formula, by sentimentality, by some jingo-ism in the telling. The comment of a reader -- who knows the Philippines and the army background was ""Putrid. I enjoyed reading it.
