NO MORE HOT FLASHES AND OTHER GOOD NEWS

The physician-author of No More Menstrual Cramps and Other Good News (1980), known to many as a fighter for better medical care for women, now speaks out on health issues for women over 35. Budoff argues, most fervently, for the use of estrogen replacement therapy in menopause (safe, she feels, when given with progesterone); for lumpectomy rather than mastectomy as the surgical component of breast cancer treatment (to be used with newer techniques of radiotherapy); and for pharmacological treatment of menstrual cramps. On the other hand, she cautions women to avoid hysterectomies (indications for the procedure are extremely specific, and not nearly as common as the national hysterectomy rate would indicate); to be aware of the risk of ovarian cancer (which may be increased, studies suggest, by the use of talcum powder in feminine hygiene); to guard against urinary tract infection and (via exercise) urinary incontinence. She also discusses how to choose suitable birth control methods. A final chapter on laboratory tests explains the more-extensive procedures Budoff thinks should be part of an annual check-up for women over 35. Agree or not, Budoff is a sympathetic exponent: even those who differ with her on specific points will find the book useful for her warnings and her advice on finding sound medical care.
