Vivid full-color photos and drawings, lift-a-flaps, and pop-ups provide visual appeal in this introduction to animals that undergo the drama of metamorphosis. While it is doubtful that children old enough to read and understand the text need pop-up frogs and lift-a-flap beetles, they will be intrigued by the engineering. Woelflein describes complete metamorphosis as experienced by butterflies (egg, larve, pupa, adult), and the incomplete metamorphosis of crickets and dragonflies (egg, nymph, adult). Unfamiliar patterns are presented as well. Throughout, the flaps are made of sturdy, glossy paper that should hold up for many openings.
