NATHAN'S FISHING TRIP

In a sequel to Nathan and Nicholas Alexander, the mouse (who has the longer name) undertakes to teach his friend the elephant how to fish. Nathan does fit in the rowboat, but his size results in a comic capsize and the loss of the fishing pole, whereupon he succeeds in catching a trout by suspending a worm from his trunk. The illustrations are the strongest element here, delicately portraying a pristine lake and woodland setting from sunrise to sunset, as well as the two appealingly funny characters. The slight story has some logical lapses: If the worm ate its way into the sandwich bag, how did the sandwiches survive their later immersion? The decision to throw the trout back because it's too pretty to eat is hardly original, but it's tree to the nature of the book's audience. Usable as an easy reader.
