MASKS

In the ""Fresh Start"" art series, two books to encourage experimentation with a variety of materials. Masks is the more inventive and striking resource. Dramatic face and body masks that can be created with readily available materials are shown in step-by-step photos; the young artists model the spectacular finished products. Three-dimensional paperplate masks, feathery bird-beak half-masks, plastic-jug creations, papier-machÉ balloon masks, and shadow masks are included, along with a short history of masks. Drawing explores traditional materials, including pastels, water-soluble colors, and waterproof inks; textured, smooth, and wet and dry surfaces are shown. Photos of tools, however, are not detailed enough to be useful--e.g., a photo of pencils is so small that the pencil numbers are illegible, thus defeating the purpose of relating the numbers to the softness of the line drawn. Still, mostly attractive and useful additions to the art section.
