The author of Five Acres And Independence wrote some time ago a MODERN GUIDE TO SUCCESSFUL GARDENING. This is a complete revision of that book, brought up to date, issued to conform with the government's program of nutrition to combat undernourishment, part of which emphasized the small ""Victory gardens"". There is readable, practical information here -- which, if not new, tells how to get more vegetables for the square footage; applies partnership planting and crop rotation to the small garden; tells what to plant when, for a short season, for a long season. Harvesting and storing, home fruits, bushes, pts, soils, tools, fertilizers, watering, seeds and seedlings, cold frames and hothouses, etc. Appendix includes valuable charts -- lots of varieties -- date schedules. There are more attractive and enticing books -- but none, I think, more down to earth.
