NOTHING'S CERTAIN BUT DEATH

Oregon's Conan Flagg--he of the ""black Indian eyes,"" the XK-E sportscar, and the Holliday Beach Book Shop--has to find out who bopped IRS auditor Eliot Nye and left him in a walk-in freezer to die; otherwise, Conan's buddy, boozy restaurateur Brian Tally, who was being savagely audited, will probably take the rap. Any Perry Mason veteran will spot the ""unlikely"" culprit almost at first glance, but Wren works hard at filling up the space between crime and punishment--with far too much talk, some flavorful characters, some nice writing, and some moist over-writing (""Poor little tax collector, curled in a frozen womb, who despised you this much?""). A rather overfed Pacific Coast specimen, then, but reassuringly demure and reasonably comfy.
