THE MYSTERY BEGAN IN MADEIRA

Mabel Esther Allan writes form-fitting mysteries with globe-trotting locales and this one is more strongly plotted than many of its predecessors. Betony, leaving Madeira for England, has taken a picture which earns her the unwanted attention of ? Aboard ship (and yes, a romance with attractive Miles) her stateroom is vandalized, there is an attempt to drown her, and in Lisbon she is almost kidnapped. Then there's Fergus Winter, who handles children's books, the Silly and Solly series, and our Dick and Jane, oops--we mean Betony and Miles realize that the Silly and Solly books are solanders (you'll need the new Random House dictionary for that one, or read the book) for caching drugs....Undemanding girls will give it their undivided attention.
