HUGH ROY CULLEN: A Story of American Opportunity

The story of Texas-born and self-made Roy Cullen straddles two centuries, and is an overwhelmingly respectful portrait of the energy and enterprise of the man who was to become one of the most powerful oil millionaires of his time. His dream- as a youngster- of a ""big white house to live in"" took him to work at 12; he jobbed here and there; farmed; married Lillie and set out for Oklahoma; returned to Houston, to politics, real estate, cotton, and finally oil. More than one well came in- and as the years passed he liked to see his money spent along with the good it could do; he gave it away freely along with his opinions. He made many munificent donations; participated in national as well as local affairs; he backed Eisenhower all the way and is still influential; and his story here closes with the celebration of his Golden Wedding anniversary- need we say it- a really sumptuous spread....An admiring glance at a man of strong action and simple faith, largely for his relatives and retinue.
