by Madeline Brent ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 28, 1973
Unabashed coincidence aside, this superstuffed story hurries from a mission in China where orphaned Lucy Waring grew up, to England during the Year of the Wild Boar and/or the Boxer Rebellion after she comes out of jail (begging for food and finally stealing it) having married one Nicholas Sabine, about to be executed. Both he and a man called Gresham and another called Robert Falcon of Moonraker are interested in the fortune in emeralds buried behind an old Chinese riddle which Lucy solves. To each her own and this one's better than most.
