Through the person of seventeen-year-old Jamie Rickard, fictional cousin of Captain John Smith, is seen the historical relationship between the Captain and Pocahontas, between the settlers and the Indians. Jamie's guts and skill as guest-hostage of the Indians make him the friend of Pocahontas, her brother Nantaqua, and her father the Emperor Powhatan--influential friends for the troubled times ahead. Power intrigue among the Indians and in the English settlement threaten war and menace Jamie personally, but a warning in time and Captain Smith's knowledge of Indian ways save all. Reluctant scholars will swallow their history whole with the fast-moving action; despite some overblown prose, it's an exciting reconstruction.
