Hans Baumann who has had a career as a schoolteacher in Germany and a lifelong interest in the prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux, Altamira and Trois Freres, writes a fresh, direct story of the four boys who discovered the Lascaux caves in 1940 and what they learned afterwards of prehistoric man. Marcel, George, Jim and Simon were the four boys and their ""find"" one day of the small opening and what lay beyond is excitingly if not compellingly written. The result of discovery brought scholars to the region and the bulk of the book is the stories of the boys hear from the famous Abbe Breuil who spends an afternoon telling them the fabulous history of Altamira- its discovery by a young girl and subsequent history of fraud and disbelief- and of Trois Freres, also found by boys. Not the least part of the story are the fascinating conjectures about prehistoric man and the deep artistic and spiritual appreciation of his work.
