Wizard Crystal is at least the happiest frog story to come along since Horwitz's Strange Story of a Frog Who Became a Prince. The magic crystal, which has the power to bring happiness, lies at the bottom of a pond where resident frogs sing contentedly GUNK GAGUNK of the warm sun, bright stars, safe home, and happy place. Then a wizard who ""had been unhappy every day for 307 years and was tired of it"" finds the crystal with a magic compass and takes it to his home. All night the frogs surround the wizard's house, singing of their home and dreaming of their crystal, until at last ""the wizard changed."" The fun here is as much in the freewheeling doodles as in the plot -- but that ends well when ""Morning came. When the wizard woke up he was not unhappy any more. He was not a wizard any more either. He was a frog."" Sparkling.
