MRS. BRIDGE

Mrs. Bridge, who appeared in one of the short stories in Evan Connell's first book- The Anatomy Lesson, returns, and in many (perhaps only a page or less each), unaccented episodes her unremarkable life is recorded. A gentle, self- effacing woman, a little limited and unworldly, she is seen in her most familiar attitudes, leading a placid, pleasant life as the wife of a wealthy lawyer, Walter, and the mother of three. She runs her household, attends Auxiliary uncheon, fills in the empty hours with Spanish- or painting, takes a trip to Europe with Walter, and is increasingly alone as the children grow up and away from her. too deeply thoughtful, she still has troubled moments as she senses the inutility isolation of her life -- complete at Walter's death.... Artlessly revealing, a saddening recognition is the touchstone here which brings with it, ultimately a quickening sympathy.
