THE WONDERFUL WINTER

A sparkling story of London in Shakespeare's day follows her Shakespeare of London and her teen age An Introduction to Shakespeare and traces the adventures of young Sir Robert Wakefield during a wonderful winter after he runs away from his Suffolk home and three oppressive aunts. An exciting chain of circumstances brings Robin to the home of the actor, John Heminges, and to work in the theatre where he has a bit part in Romeo and Juliet and meets Burbage, Kempe and even Shakespeare. The year is 1596-1597, and although it ends with the temporary dissolution of the theatre (Shakespeare was to build the Globe later), and Robin's knowledge that he is not a born actor, he goes home with the enthusiasm of his experiences and the pride of his accomplishments. Delightful and authentic, this is a story which lends immediacy to the past and brings an incentive toward further study of this period.
