Small, red-haired and friendless, David McCheever, on his first day in a new town, sets out for market to buy meat and groceries. On the way home, the meat falls through a hole in the bag, and one by one dogs begin to follow him. The number multiplies to 29, and when first owners, than bystanders, and finally a band and police escort join in, David finds himself leading an odd parade. He also discovers that people in the new place know his name. The action packed colorful illustrations exhibit an exaggerated outlook on a winsome lad and his venture which will attract the post-toddler clan. A fine first for a new author who is here supported by an established artist.
