The book, says the author, is meant for those in search for meaning. Such meaning would be found in a world religion, based not on authoritarian dogma but upon objectively established facts and subjective spiritiual experience. The author believes that grounds for such a religion are available. The development of this position is organized into two parts. The first deals with The Evolution of Consciousness, from Self-Ignorance through Self Observation, The True Self, Cosmic Consciousness, Symbolism in Religious Thinking, and Paranormal Consciousness. The second part takes up The Evolution of Life, from Cosmogenesis through Biogenesis, and the Challenge of Life. Two appendices treat the Emotional, Social, and Intellectual aspects of the theme. The author draws widely and selectically on literature, science, and religion for her discussion, but the result is not always convincing.
