by Margaret J. Anderson ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 10, 1975
Elizabeth from Timberhill, Oregon, lonely in the Dorset school she must attend for a year, begins to merge her identity with an apparition from the 19th century named Ann Lauden and soon finds that her sojourns in the bleak world of the ghostly cottage family are less and less under her control. Anderson can't command the slick time change machinery of some more practiced authors and both Ann and Elizabeth tend to be wanly, transparently sincere even when some more palpable gumption might be in order, Yet the emotional transference between this century and the last is somehow more than usually affecting, and other girls Elizabeth's age will likely be as susceptible as she is to Ann's plaintive need for companionship.
