Set in the last decades of the ninth century, this is the story of the unification of Christian England and France against the marauding Vikings. Elstrid, the youngest daughter of King Alfred, bemoans the fact that she is undistinguished. In an effort to redeem herself, she sets out on a pilgrimage to Rome. En route, she meets her relative, the Frankish Queen Judith. Filled with fear at this beautiful woman, who is, according to rumor, a witch, she balks at marrying into her court. But the marriage occurs and Elstrid plays a courageous role in the Christian effort to drive the heathen from Western European soil. A romantic story which imparts painlessly a substantial quantity of historical information about a period vital in the formation of a united Christian Europe.
