A prolific ""future directed"" author well known for such lucid scientific books as Exploting Earth and Space (1957, J-199), From Submarines to Satellites (1958, J-198), Atoms Today and Tomorrow (1959, J-267), etc., focuses now on our own planet and its incredible population explosion, and how scientists are preparing to tap new channels in order to overcome the startling imbalance between people and resources. We first ""look to the earth"", then the sea, and finally to the sky, and watch ingenious ideas take shape as all three areas are probed for the food, minerals and energy necessary for life. Water can be farmed as well as mined. Great mineral treasures lie beneath the earth's surface and forests can be planned and preserved. Outer space may hold some of the answers for man's survival, certainly such ancient elements as the sun and the rain will some day be controlled for maximum output. Realistic, yet optimistic, this is a timely and worthwhile summary of man's struggle with his environment.
