THE ONE AND ONLY

....turns out to be a mild lesson in human understanding and the tragedy of over-possessiveness, much the same as in Margaretta Brucker's other novels but a bit more seriously and sensibly toned. Lynn Fairchild is a well adjusted girl in high school but her circle is in an uproar when her brother George's fiancee, Fran, marries another man too soon after George has been killed in Korea. This exposes the fact that George had married another girl secretly, just before he left. To shield Mrs. Fairchild, who had loved Fran, from this latest blow, ynn's father takes her on a vacation, leaving Lynn at home with Aunt Helen and the prospect of finding George's young widow Millie and her child. Bucking gossip, Lynn brings Millie successfully into the family fold, falls in love with her brother Michael, and the full effect of Mrs. Fairchild's hold over George is realized and lived down by all. Gossip mongering.
