The militarist-politician's wartime diary has been used as the main part of this biography by his younger sister. I cannot see a very wide market, as this a eulogy, predicated on an initial interest in the man, and closing with the thought that, had he not died in 1935, he ""might have saved France"". Childhood in Lorraine, schooling at the LycÉe Condorcet in Paris; service to France his goal from fourteen on; under secretary of the cabinet in Algiers, return to France, marriage, deputy of the chamber, under-secretary of war. Then the war, recorded in his own words, from common poilu to scout on patrolling missions. Later years as minister of war, and his program, including the fortifications which bear his name. Uninspired factual record.
