This is Volume One- A-L of a stupendous achievement in representative sampling of folk lore, hero tales, animal legends, dances, ballads, songs drawn from cultures around the world. Less space, perhaps, than might be expected is given to classical sources on the assumption that there is available a greater amount of competent material in the field. The editors have tapped many primary sources, obscure, difficult to get at; they have included original covering articles by thirty authorities on special cultures and types of folk lore, including such names familiar in the field as Botkin, Herzog, Seeger, Herskovits, and many more. The alphabetical arrangement, the extensive use of cross references to amplify and interrelate allied subjects makes this a valuable reference tool. Volume Two is to be published in 1950.
