On a London-bound plane out of Boston, Stacy Orpington--acting as courier for her small-town museum--is carrying a fortune in jewels in a cheap hatbox. Imagine, then, her surprise on finding that three other women aboard are carrying identical hatboxes! And this unlikely beginning leads to the inevitable mixup: Stacy winds up with the wrong box--after which she flees nameless gangsters, finds the body of a murdered stewardess, and visits her unpleasant, newly-discovered cousin Eustace . . . all the while attempting to retrieve the jewels before the day they're due to be exhibited at a London gallery. Throughout, Stacy emerges as a top contender for idiot heroine of the month--despite help from fellow-passenger Alistair Lord, an out-of-work actor with two precocious kids in his charge, Hortense and Marvin. And along the way Stacy learns that her boss/fiancÉ back home is a crook as well as a bore. A sticky confection from the talented but erratic Babson--only occasionally redeemed by twelve-year-old Marvin, a US general's son who reads Scientific American and has been thrown out of all the best schools.
