THERE MUST BE SOME MISTAKE

Babson, whose work can sometimes be buoyant (Line Up For Murder, etc.), hits bottom with this labored, near-amateurish story of nasty doings in the London offices of Harding Handicrafts, recently acquired by an American conglomerate. Karen Randolph is chief ceramics designer; her husband John is the company's general manager. He and unglamorous secretary Grace have failed to return from a routine business meeting in Brussels--and a fortune in bearer bonds is missing as well. Chairman of the board Vernon Vandergreit and sugary wife Lydia--along with chief accountant Simone Conway and sales director Harvey Livingston--try to treat the disappearance as a lovers' escapade, refuse to notify the police and attempt to placate Karen. They're still trying even after Grace is discovered drowned inside the company car, but the poison death of Simone's womanizing husband Derek sparks a clumsy confrontation that's supposed to make all come clear. Plastic people, pages of inane chatter and a plot that defies reason make this mistake a whopper.
