by Maribel Vinson Owen ‧ RELEASE DATE: Dec. 21, 1960
A how-to book for the skater-to-be this has its advice first on equipment -- clothes- boots that fit and skates that are properly aligned- before it takes the beginner on the ice. And there, it is only to stand, to take steps, to scull and to pushoff prior to the initial glide. The primary edges come next, crossovers, forward and backward skating, then spirals, spread eagles, mohawks, threes, rolls, waltzing and eights take the skater into the figures. Further elements and patterns complete the school section; free skating and jumps follow and then there is a chapter on various dance routines. There are over 180 photographs, drawings and diagrams to illustrate the instructions and Mrs. Owen's own experience as champion and member of three Olympic teams, and as teacher and coach, is obvious in her carefully prepared and warmly shared outlines of correct methods of execution so that the timidest tyro should be gliding off sooner and better than he might expect.
