Although there are numerous editions of fairy tales, many of which contain a substantial percentage of the stories herein included, this Golden Book collection will find its welcome place on the nursery shelf. Taken from all over the world, these traditional tales are retold by Charles Perrault, Andersen, Madame d'Aulnoy Madame Leprince de Beaumont, Contesse de Segur, and the Brothers Grimm and achieve homogeneity in that they are uniformly tasteful, delicate, and richly imaginative. The colored illustrations of Adrienne Segur succeed admirably in heightening the quality of wonder intrinsic to the stories, rather than, as many illustrations do, losing ground in the attempt to limit fantasy to the restrictions of the drawn form. They are large, elaborate, romantic, and colored in fascinating jewel and flower tones. A tonic for the television addicted child, whose capacity for imaginative conceptions is under daily threat of elimination. Elegant and good sized typography.
