A hard book to place: Marie Osmond is part Hollywood glamour puss, part observant Mormon, and her book has qualities reflecting both worlds--like advice on false eyelashes, electrolysis, face masks. . . and ""Waiting for Dating."" Aimed at teenagers, it features much of the same beauty and health topics as grown-up books (skin and hair care, exercise, diet, fashion) plus a few extras, such as braces--all current, fairly imaginative stuff. Many girls will find her long list of makeup supplies beyond their budgets, and quickly reject an un-constructed blazer or a string of pearls as fashion essentials, but there's enough variety here to interest tastes somewhere between painter's pants and Junior Dior. The section on Marie's personal philosophy, however, often reads like a Seventeen column from the Fifties: Mom is her best friend, and sex is out of the picture (""Why not have sex without marriage? Because, if you believe in God and the Ten Commandments, you can't put new words on old sins""). Not for everyone, then, and perhaps not for many.
