AUTO-KA-ZAR AUTO-KA-ZOOM-/BROOMZAKAR-KARZABROOM!"" Thus Gabby changes cars to brooms so she and her spooky friends won't have their house destroyed by the mayor who wants the land for a freeway. People are pleased with the switch except for some in Detroit and Texas, and gas station attendants and road and bridge builders. When Gabby turns the brooms back into cars, ""little red cars come tumbling out of broom closets everywhere,"" and the mayor agrees to divert the highway. The illustrations--straight for people, gnarled for witches--will attract attention even if the story is just a trick of the whisk.
