GETTING READY FOR PARENTHOOD

A useful but orthodox guide for expectant mothers rather than expectant fathers, though the husband's role is given passing attention in certain chapters. For their first babies, mothers will find sane advice and amplification on the reproductive system, the physiology of pregnancy, health and dietary rules, doctor's examinations, and the common fears and psychological attitudes that can make pregnancy a nightmare. The final stages of birth itself are described in detail as to normal procedure and variation. Here the author comments on the benefits of natural childbirth with its emphasis on greater physical and spiritual rewards and the immediate partnership of husband, wife and child which makes hospitalization less cut and dried. Then, home at last, a final word on the first stages of infant care and feeding completes a substantial handbook.
