Here is a fantasy set on an Irish island in which a child enters into a wonderful and sometimes sinister world of fairies. Reminiscent of Peter Ibbetson in the conviction with which it conjures up the dimension of magic while maintaining an equally strong motif of human emotion, it tells of the fairy kings who every eight years must resign both throne and life, and of the love by a mortal for one king which saves him from the fairy fate. Lyrical, vivid in its descriptions both of natural and supernatural phenomena, this is aimed at the young adult market, but will have a strong appeal for readers of twelve and up.
