Sharmat and Wallner collaborate on a companion volume to their Hooray for Mother's Day! with a similarly entertaining result. This time, the characters are mules, living in a desert canyon. Father Mule, a single parent, has two loving children with two different approaches to Father's Day festivities. Sterling thinks he should do things for Dad: make him a huge breakfast; treat him to a warm bath complete with rubber ducks and cornstarch. Monica, on the other hand, thinks that presents are the thing: a jump rope; tickets to the Annual Mule Picnic and Band Concert. By day's end, Father's idea is to be left along in peace and quiet, but he settles for a barbecue under the stars--and no more presents. Executed in flat graphics and bright, solid colors, the book's appeal lies in its absurdity--a mule in a bathtub, or wearing cowboy boots and Bermuda shorts. It lacks the reverse twist ending of its predecessor, but it's a jolly book for young readers with their own Father's Days to plan.
