by Martha -- Ed. Foley ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 12, 1944
An annual, important as a reflection of the best in the short story field, and as a stimulus to new talent. Once again a collection of high interest if perhaps less popular, less familiar selections. Established writers in Dorothy Canfield, William Marsh, Josephine Johnson, Irwin Show -- all in top form. Superior fare in the O'Henry prize winning Fisherman of Patscuaro by William Fifield; in a good Negro story. The White Best by Sidney Alexander; and two New Yorker stories, More Like a Coffin and A Lecel Shirmish. Interesting representation from some lesser known periodicals. -- Southwest Review, Partisan Review, Tomorrow, Accent. Contemporary, liberal issues and values, as well as literary, with less of the strictly popular flavor than in former anthologies.
