Following in Cinderella's footsteps, Callie Rose is led to success by a pumpkin in this case turning into a pie instead of a coach. She and her mother have just moved to the country from the factory end of town, but since nobody is willing to bring them sewing it looks as if they may have to return to the sooty city. Callie Rose is readfully upset when she is told that her third grade class will hold a celebration called a fruit bust to which they are all supposed to bring food to split up for everyone else, because she knows that she can't afford to bring anything. Fortunately a pumpkin rolls out of a truck in front of her, and although she fears she will be laughed at at school; she spends hours rolling it home so that it can be brought to the party. Much to her surprise, the pumpkin makes its appearance in the form of individual tarts. Callie Rose's popularity is assured, and a ready market develops for her mother's baking. Eight-year-olds may be able to identify with Callie Rose's activities, but will find her saccharine bravery cloying.
