THE NIGHT IS COMING

Regional novel -- the background of Indiana in the building as seen through the life of one family and primarily of one character, Stella Buchanan, an ugly, rawboned woman with a masculine drive, a hard worker, shrewd, not above double play. The story of a lonely life, but a vigorous one, as she manages the big farm left to her and her brothers and sisters, rules the scrub folk, bargains in real estate, and ends by making a fortune by fair means and foul. Well done of its kind, -- a faithful reproduction of a barren, brutal country and a pioneer woman. Limited in appeal.
