Occupation by occupation, Sandier has assembled an impressive collection of old photos (most of them taken within twenty years of the turn of the century--but here, alas, neither dated nor credited) that show lumbermen, farmers, teamsters, factory hands, and other workers at their jobs. He has no particular viewpoint to give the album direction but there is documentary and visual interest in the individual photos--of small boys working in a mine, of the inside of a sailing vessel under construction, of a settlement-house nurse making her rounds via tenement rooftops, etc. Sandler's brief text functions mostly as background--whereas sometimes more specifics on the pictured devices are in order--but occasional excerpts from workers' own accounts sharpen the picture.
