You might call this an obstetrical melodrama in which some annals of unnatural child-birth attend the rape of happily married if thus far nonproductive Cora. She has been the wife of Rare for three years and now, with Cora's pregnancy by a thus far unidentified assailant, he's eaten by jealousy, revulsion and the notion that he's been unmanned. While never completely accepting Cora's determination to have the baby, he does submit to it, in between drinks; both have to put up with the ""tolerance"" of the community; and finally the realization that the stud is the hired man (also kept) of a friend of theirs--a predatory widow. Mary Astor, the highhanded duenna of daytime serials like this, assumes your unflinching credibility. It won't be there, but you will.
