The interweaving of many strands of one woman's life, seen through the lives and eyes of others, emphasizes the conflicts involved in the story of American Amanda, married to English Gilbert Dewhurst, whose rise in the Foreign Office will permit of no scandal. Saved from an attempt at suicide, Amanda successful in her second and the search -- for the reasons for her actions and for the letters she has managed to request an old friend to obtain -- takes on an intricate pattern. For she and the letters turn out to be a link to the mysterious Jaques, whose two books have brought fame to his publisher and who, vanished behind the iron curtain, is known to be active in the underground. It is Dewhurst's mistress, Eloise, who finds and steals the letters and, reading them, learning of the love between Jaques and Amanda, realizes that she has lost Gilbert and her chance of respectability in marriage to him. And Dewhurst, at last aware of the futility of his career and life, knows Amanda has won in the way she has met the tests and crises she knew. An adept writer tells a tantalizing tale.
