HONESTLY, KATIE JOHN!

This third book about the young girl who moved to Missouri (Katie John, 1960, p. 48, J-16, and Depend on Katie John) is a record of the lass' troubles after, she loudly declares that she hates boys, and becomes a leader of the Boy-Haters Club. Her comrade, Edmund, is hurt by her pronouncement, and no longer seeks her friendships. Even when other six graders begin wearing lipstick, learning to dance, and trying to lure the boys back, Katie sticks stubbornly to her stand. Only after learning about the life of a girl who had lived in her house years ago, does Katie John try to enjoy feminine fancies. The story is too drawn out (there is too much of the same), but young confused -- or one-time confused-- tomboys will enjoy and identify with lively Katie John, and her experiences.
