The wildest things happen in the gentlest way in this third story by author-artist Mary Chalmers whose work is faintly reminscent of Esther Averill's Jenny stories. Billy and Tommy Brown, about six and three, start out from the country to the distant city along with their dog and cat, Michael and Georgianna, to buy their sister Amy Jean a hat for her birthday. As if to symbolize the utter impossibility of their task, it is accomplished only with the aid of many animals, helicopters and kind ladies. This soft, small giddiness to the accomplishment of tiny grey- green pictures makes a book- full of pleasure.
