This is scarcely a novel, but rather a collection of vignettes which bring a Maine fishing hamlet to life. The motivating factor is the death of old Sarah Holt who represented an era that wan ending, and who had been important in many lives. Her death and the preparations for her funeral, unique in the annals of the village, provide the reason for introducing to the reader each household, the couples who were her friends, the handful of old residents, fisherfolk chiefly, who kept, a way of thought and life. You get the types, their stories, their backgrounds, their interrelationships -- good for the most part, but there was their Magdalen -- and the lawbreakers -- the indifferent -- and the quibblers. But somehow the death leveled barriers, and some were facing a more hopeful future because of the unity it brought. A slice of America is envisioned here, told with the warmth and compassionate understanding Miss Chase can give.
