METROPOLIS

This emerges from the full ranks of books on New York City this year as something quite different and first rate in its own field. Instead of being simply another guide, this book will give the junior reader a real insight into how a city is run -- not only New York, but any large city, though the facts are drawn from New York. The form of city government, the various departments (health, police, fire, etc.) the facilities and industries of the city. Then a section devoted to old houses, famous in history and typical each of its own period. Visits to markets, a laundry, a newspaper -- each showing the facts behind the front. A book which should be required reading in every city school.
