Another perceptive, entertaining story from the author of Cry Uncle! (1987). The situation is familiar: Jenna pines after her father, who has a new wife, lives far away, and pays her scant attention; she worries about the family finances and whether her friends will find out about Mom's job (she's a ""zit zapper"" who retouches school photos), and resents Mom's new boyfriend. Still, the details are not only comic but grounded in reality: Mom has trouble holding a job till she finds one that suits her talents (and a child-pleasing job it is--designing wacky costumes for a local TV station); her weather-announcer friend not only has a flamboyant on-the-air personality but is a sensible, nice (though offbeat) guy. Again, Auch has created likable, original characters and told their story with humor and affection. Easily read; easily enjoyed.
