I suppose in these streamlined days, this should be accepted with equanimity. Even to my prejudiced eye, the job of excision seems to be a loving one. The memorable scenes are here the characters that live today; what I miss are the silly little turns of phrase that became household words, as DAVID COPPERFIELD, PICKWICK PAPERS, OLIVER TWIST, MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT (No, not Vartin Chuzzlewit -- I never felt I knew this novel well) were shared in the family rending circle. Few people have the privilegs our generation enjoyed. For them, here is an opportunity to get better than nodding with the four novels indicated, in a condensation from a million and a half words to a mere 250,000. A fine piece of book making:- excellent type face, appealing illustrations by Donald McKay, attractive binding.
