An addition to the Lippincott Classics -- this story of ordinary people in a village in Holland has been a favorite for several generations. Along with Heidi it has the perennial appeal of a poor child making good on his own. Despite aspersions cast on the tale, it has a vitality that gives it immortality, and the screen picture in the offing will insure aroused interest. One could wish that another artist than Pelagie Doane had been assigned the illustrations. Her drawings- for this text- seem to stress a sentimental quality, and to convey the idea of rather static posterlike figures.
